On June 27 we drove from Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve, stopping to look at this dik-dik. The reserve was wonderful, but the road there from Narok was so terrible, so much worse than any other, that I wondered whether it was worth it. As Agoi was driving on the shoulder, he said that the next six months or a year might see some progress.

Since the Mara Serena Lodge (interestingly decorated rooms that were big enough for two, unlike any other hotel we stayed at, but less good service than the others) is so far inside the park, we stopped for lunch at Keekorok Lodge. Hint to birders: If you take a break at Keekorok, remember your binoculars. I saw several species there that I didn't see at the Mara Serena, including a purple sunbird and a yellow one that I couldn't identify.

Strange tree

As we neared the Mara Serena, we saw a tree that was more interesting than it first looked.

We stayed at Masai Mara for two nights and went on three game drives. And we saw still more birds.
